Essential for ensuring visibility on the road, your car’s headlights are integral for safe driving. Without these auto parts, it’s both difficult and dangerous to navigate the streets and communicate with other drivers on the road. Because its use is required daily, they need to be replaced regularly. However, there are a few types available; to better understand the differences between them, here’s what you need to know.

What Are the Different Types of Headlights?

1. Halogen

The most common type of headlight, halogen lights have a filament that’s surrounded by a mixture of gases. When that filament burns, the heat interacts with the gases and generates light.

The bulb can get quite hot, and the color itself tends to have a yellow tone to it. Halogen headlights are inexpensive to produce, and because of that, these auto parts are readily available.

2. LED

auto partsPopular with newer models, light-emitting diodes (LED) headlights emit light through a process called electroluminescence. Most dashboard lights already use LEDs to illuminate the displays.

Compared to halogen headlights, these auto parts are a bit more expensive, but they’re also more energy-efficient, so you won’t have to replace them as often. In terms of color, they are brighter than halogens and lean towards the blue end of the spectrum.

3. HID

Short for “high-intensity discharge,” these lights use vaporized metals and a mixture of gases to produce light. The result is bluish-white light that’s generally as bright as an LED headlight.

Some people find them too bright to be comfortable on the road. HID headlights are commonly used in higher-end vehicles, although the price and availability are similar to those of LEDs.
