If you’re putting artwork in a storage unit, packing properly is a crucial step. Both framed and unframed pieces need special care to ensure no damage occurs, whether they’ll be stored for a month or several years. Follow these steps for success.

How to Safely Put Art in Self-Storage

1. Wrap Well

For framed art, use a storage blanket or plastic sheet to wrap each piece tightly, and secure the packaging with tape. Attach plywood or hardboard to the front and back to protect the art from damage.

If the piece is unframed, silicone release paper will safely cover the front without sticking. Wrap the canvas in glassine paper to ensure the piece doesn’t get scratched, and follow up with hardboard on the front and back. Cover the entire package with a storage blanket, and secure everything with packing tape.

2. Box Up Small Pieces

Smaller artwork can be safely sealed in cardboard boxes. If you don’t have the perfect size, create a container with pieces of cardboard and packing tape.

Fill in any empty spaces with extra cushioning materials to prevent jostling, and place each box on a shelf. Avoid stacking them on top of each other to avoid putting too much weight on the containers.

3. Choose Climate-Controlled Storage

Humidity can lead to mold and mildew growth that can damage your art. Keep the unit between 70 and 75 degrees, and maintain a humidity level of 40%-50%.

4. Keep Away From Objects

Designate a section of the storage unit for artwork, and keep other objects like furniture and bins away to avoid damage. Corners from tables can dent and scratch the art.

Squeezing pieces too closely against other items can distort them, especially unframed paintings. If you must keep them close to other belongings, add extra padding between each item.
