Do:

Wash and wax regularly.

When abrasive dirt and debris accumulate on your car, they may deteriorate the finish and leave scratches. Prevent this by washing your vehicle once weekly. Hand washing can provide a more thorough cleansing of the hood, doors, and bumpers. 

After drying your vehicle with chamois or microfiber towels, apply a coat of wax and allow it to sit for about 15 minutes before buffing it out. The wax will provide a protective barrier against debris and scratches.

Leave space around your vehicle while parking.

Avoid parking right next to other vehicles or leave at least four feet of space on all sides of your automobile. This can prevent opening car doors or passing shopping carts from making contact with your auto body and damaging it. If you park on the street, stay close to the curb to minimize the possibility of passing vehicles brushing against your car or truck.

Don't:

Allow animals on your vehicle. 

Dogs and cats may climb or jump onto the auto body and leave scratches from their nails. Keep your furry friends away from your vehicle by parking it in a garage or other area they cannot enter.

Leave cars outdoors for extended periods.

Branches and pinecones can fall onto cars parked beneath them and leave significant scratches and dents. Park under a carport or in a garage as often as possible to protect your auto body from tree debris. If you need to leave a car parked for an indefinite period and do not have a covered space, put it into storage.
