Parking lot damage is a common issue behind the need for dent repair. There are countless opportunities for dings to occur between people opening doors, backing up out of spots, or children running around.  There are some simple strategies you can use to protect your car from the most common causes of auto body dings while in a parking lot.

How to Prevent Auto Body Damage in Parking Lots

1. Park Further from the Door

The largest concentration of vehicles is near the front door of the building, because people don’t want to walk farther than they need to. If you’re willing to park a little farther from the door, there will be less traffic around your parked vehicle and a smaller chance of someone parking in the spot next to you.

2. Choose an End Spot

A parking spot on the end of the row will only have one neighboring spot, so you automatically cut in half the chances that someone could open their door into your car or bump it while pulling in next to you. Park at the end of the row and pull in as close to the end cap as possible, giving you some extra buffer space for the next spot.

3. Avoid Compact Spots

This may mean parking a little farther from the front door, but you’ll have some valuable buffer between you and your neighbor.

4. Park on the Passenger Side

If you have a choice between parking on either side of another vehicle, choose the passenger side. There will always be a driver opening their door to get in and out, but there may not be passengers. This is especially true in your work parking lot, where many people drive in alone.

5. Give Space to Family Cars

Families have children running around, strollers or car seats to pull out, and young children opening doors carelessly. Avoid parking next to minivans or any cars that have a car seat set up in the backseat. The parents will appreciate you giving them some extra space anyway to fully open up their doors and buckle their kids into their seats.
