Electrolysis offers an effective solution for removing unwanted hair from the body. This is achieved by using electric currents to destroy the follicles and prevent regrowth. While most patients only feel mild discomfort during the procedure, the skin can have an adverse reaction if proper care instructions aren’t followed. Keep these tips in mind after your session to help minimize irritation and ensure you’re getting the best results from each treatment.

Do:

Soothe the skin.

It’s common to experience some redness, swelling, and a slight burning sensation after receiving electrolysis. Use a gentle cream wash to keep the treated area clean, and moisturize daily to prevent the skin from drying out. You can also apply petroleum jelly or aloe vera to help calm inflammation and stimulate a faster recovery. Apply cold compresses to reduce swelling.

Also, refrain from applying makeup or any scented or alcohol-based products for at least 72 hours to avoid interrupting the healing process. Makeup can clog the pores and cause pimples. Harsh substances, such as scrubs and toners, increase the risk of irritation and infection.

Stay out of direct sunlight.

Steer clear of the sun and tanning lamps for two to three days after an electrolysis appointment. Sunlight will increase sensitivity and can cause brown pigment spots to appear in the treated area. If you must go out and there’s a chance of sun exposure, liberally apply sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF.

Don’t:

Touch the treated area.

Because the hands carry bacteria, resist the temptation to touch the treated area so that germs aren’t transferred, which can result in a breakout and infection. Also, if scabs appear, don’t scratch or pick them off. They should be allowed to fall off naturally to prevent scarring. Always wash your hands thoroughly before applying any soothing products or feeling the skin.

Sweat excessively.

Avoid engaging in activities that lead to excessive sweating, including exercising or sitting in a sauna or hot tub. Sweat can transmit a buildup of bacteria into the open follicles and cause infection. Being exposed to heat can also result in hyperpigmentation. Take a few days to relax and enjoy the smoothness of your skin before restarting your usual workout routine.
