Electrolysis is a popular and effective process for permanently removing body hair. It is quick, easy, and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). If you’ve decided to schedule a session, here is what you can expect during your first visit.

What Should You Expect From Electrolysis?

1. Consultation

Before the treatment, meet with the practitioner to determine where you would like to have hair removed. They will then examine the area to determine how many sessions are necessary. On average, most people will come in once or twice a week for 15- to 60-minute sessions. Depending on the hair’s location, it could take one to four years to remove all of it.

2. Sample Test

electrolysisTo determine if the process will go as planned, the technician will usually recommend a test session. This will require inserting a fine probe into each hair follicle. An electric current goes down to the root, destroying the dermal papilla cells that nourish the follicles so they can’t grow back. This allows them to remove the hair without any resistance.

3. Full Treatment

If the initial test produced the desired results, you are ready for the full treatment. After making sure you’re comfortable, the electrologist will apply a disinfectant solution before beginning, which should take 15 seconds for each hair follicle. When the session is over, they will apply a soothing lotion to the area to close the pores and ease any discomfort. It will be your responsibility to avoid direct sunlight and moisturize regularly between appointments.
