The recommended temperature for storing frozen foods is about 0 degrees Fahrenheit. If the freezer is any colder, you can waste energy and risk damaging the food with freezer burn. Check your appliance regularly with an independent, digital thermometer. If it experiences frequent temperature swings, you might need freezer repair. Below are some reasons your freezer might be too cold.

How to Tell Your Freezer Is Too Cold

1. Thermostat Is Set Too Low

If the digital test thermometer shows too low of a temperature, make sure the appliance thermostat is set properly. It is usually located inside the back of the unit, or sometimes just below it at the top of the refrigerator compartment.

Set the thermostat to 0 degrees Fahrenheit. If it doesn't let you set a specific temperature, turn the dial a notch or two to "Warmer."  This should prevent freezer burn, condensation on the appliance, and ice buildup on frozen items.

2. Failing Temperature Sensor

The temperature sensor takes regular readings inside the appliance. It regulates the fans, damper, and compressor to keep the freezer at a steady temperature. If it is failing, it may not read the internal temperatures correctly and let your freezer become too cold.

Check your appliance owner's manual to find out where the sensor is located and how to reset it. If this does not fix the problem, contact a professional appliance service for freezer repair.

3. Obstructed Air Damper

To cool the freezer, a fan blows air across a cold, metal apparatus called the evaporator coil. Cold air from the freezer then seeps into the refrigerator through a flap called the air damper. If the damper is closed or not open enough, cold air cannot escape the freezer to keep the fridge cold. This can cause freezer burn to foods while increasing the temperature of the refrigerator.

Unplug the appliance, remove the damper cover, and see if something is blocking it from opening. If you see no obstructions, have a service technician replace the damper for you.
