Many drivers place their RVs in storage over the winter since they aren't traveling as often. If you've decided to park your vehicle at a storage facility, you should prepare the unit beforehand so that it's ready to use come springtime. Follow these steps to keep the vehicle in good condition while it's packed away.

4 Ways to Get Your RV Ready for Storage

1. Remove Items From Inside

As you prepare the unit, take out any sentimental or valuable belongings that could get damaged by cold weather. Remove all liquids, such as toothpaste, lotions, creams, sauces, and drinks. Containers may crack in low temperatures, and once the cold thaws out, you'll be left with a mess to clean up.

Electronics can be susceptible to damage caused by temperature fluctuations, so bring any phones, tablets, or gaming consoles in. Stay organized by keeping any chargers or cables with the devices.

2. Clean the Interior

Before heading to the storage facility, clean the inside of the RV thoroughly. Vacuum and sweep all floors, wipe down the counters, sinks, and appliances, dust all cabinets and shelves, and clean the toilet. Launder all the blankets, bedding, and towels to remove hidden dust and germs.

3. Winterize the Plumbing

Winterize the RV's plumbing system so that you don't end up with cracked pipes or a damaged water heater. Your RV manufacturer may have specific instructions on how to do this, but it generally involves emptying the tanks, draining the faucets, and running antifreeze through the system.

You can also use an air compressor to blow out lingering water. Most dealerships offer a winterization service if you don't want to handle it on your own.

4. Cover the Tires

Even when the tires aren't in motion, they can suffer wear and tear from sitting for long periods. Also, the sun can wear down the rubber and warp the treads, making the tires unsafe. Tire covers prevent sun exposure and keep the wheels in good shape during long-term storage. If possible, re-park the vehicle every few weeks to rotate the tires and prevent flat spots from developing.
