Dishwashers make it fast, convenient, and stress-free to clean up after a meal. However, they tend to be the type of appliance that you don't think much about until something goes wrong. By that time, you'll need to bring in a dishwasher repair professional. Fortunately, there are ways you can maintain your dishwasher and minimize the need for appliance repairs. Below are a few do's and don'ts to help you out.

Do:

Load your dishwasher in an organized way.

To use your dishwasher most effectively, organize the dishes and utensils as you load them. Glasses and mugs, small bowls, and other smaller items should go on the top rack. Larger bowls, plates, and pots and pans should go on the bottom.

Position pans with caked-on debris so the dirtier side is facing the spray-arm. Load utensils handle-first. These steps will ensure thorough, even cleaning and prevent blocking of the spray-arm and detergent.

Clean your dishwasher.

Because of the heat and moisture it retains, a dishwasher is a prime breeding ground for germs. Aim to clean your dishwasher monthly to prevent potentially harmful bacteria or mold growth, as well as debris buildup that can impair the spray-arm and other working parts. Place a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container on the upper rack.

Run a hot-water cycle to completion. Remove the container and sprinkle one cup of baking soda across the bottom of the dishwasher. Run another hot-water cycle all the way through. These steps will remove dirt, grime, and odors.

Don't:

Overload the machine.

Overloading a dishwasher can result in uneven cleaning, scratched or broken dishes, and unnecessary wear and tear on the machine's various parts. To prevent the need for dishwasher repairs, only load your machine with what it can handle. This means leaving space between every item so that water and detergent can access all sides.

Be especially careful not to overload cutlery; sharp ends of utensils could scratch or pierce the interior of the machine and cause leaks.

Unload the top rack first.

Always unload the bottom rack before the top. Unloading the top rack first can cause dirty water to fall onto the clean dishes in the bottom rack. This would force you to run the load through again, putting your machine through more wear and tear.
