For many people, the term “insulation” conjures images of the fluffy pink fiberglass found in the attic. Although that material is still used to help maintain indoor temperatures, it's not the only choice for insulation.  In fact, many homeowners are opting for spray foam insulation instead, which offers even more energy efficiency thanks to its ability to fill even the smallest air leaks and gaps and ensures compliance with the latest building codes.

What Is Spray Foam Insulation?

Spray foam, also known as spray polyurethane foam, is a mixture of a resin and a chemical called isocyanate. These two materials are stored in separate drums until they are mixed using a heated hose. The combined material is sprayed into the desired area, where it immediately expands up to 100 percent of its size, filling in all open areas. Once the material dries and solidifies, it's often coated with an ignition-barrier paint to increase fire resistance.

Spray foam is offered in both open and closed cell forms. Open-cell foam is typically used indoors in areas where you would typically see insulation, such as in attics and basements and in wall cavities. It's not waterproof, but the open-cell design does allow any moisture that permeates the insulation to dry quickly. Closed-cell foam is mostly used for exterior insulation, as it has a higher R-value, or thermal resistance, than open-cell foam. It's also waterproof and flood-proof.

What Are the Benefits of Spray Foam?

Spray foam insulation's biggest advantage over other materials is its higher R-value. Because it expands to fill any space where air could leak in or out, it is more effective at maintaining a consistent temperature. This puts less strain on your HVAC system and helps maintain energy efficiency.

Spray foam is also less susceptible to damage from mold. Unlike fiberglass insulation, which can be a food source for mold, open-cell spray foam doesn't feed the spores, even when it collects moisture. Closed-cell foam is impervious to water, so mold isn't an issue. Foam also helps dampen sound, and closed-cell foam can add strength to the walls.

How Is Spray Insulation Installed?

When having spray foam insulation installed, you'll need to leave your home for 12-24 hours to allow for spraying and curing. The trained installers wear special equipment and ventilate your home using fans while they spray the mix into the designated areas. Once the foam dries, it's safe to enter the area, and you do not have to worry about breathing in harmful contaminants or particles.
